This is a question that we often get asked. There are now hundreds of domain name extensions out there now and yet just under 50% of all of the domain names / web sites in existence are .com Most businesses that have International custom use a .com as their default business domain name, however most businesses in the UK that have mostly British customers will use a .co.uk as their businesses main domain name.
If you have a serious business that is using its brand or trading name as it domain name, then it is advisable to register all main extensions for that name if possible. It is advisable to register both .com and .net extensions for your company name, and .co.uk if the business is based in the UK.
Many people use their company name as their domain name (eg. Acme Ltd would use acme.com or acme.co.uk). Some people find that their ideal name is taken and go with a slightly lesser know extension such as acme.xyz, although this is not recommended for professional businesses. It is also still always advisable to consider using your main keyword as your domain name (eg. cheap-tools-acme.com) as Google and other search engines do still give some merit to this practice for search results.
